Artist: Andre van Zijl
July 11-30
Opening reception July 11 6-9 pm.
Music by J Peter Boles

As an award-winning artist of international merit, Zimbabwean-born artist Andre van Zijl’s work has historically been an artistic commentary on socio-political and global culture from a spiritual standpoint. In his ancestral and adopted homeland, South Africa, he was a victim himself of the attention and scrutiny of the secret police, which has deeply motivated him to give voice to those seeking a voice. Art to him “is a creative sword for peace.” His work from this era challenged the institutionalized inequities between the privileged and the exploited, structured as a system of government called apartheid. Andre’s art was instrumental as a historical voice of progress and change in this tumultuous period and is represented in many important international museums, public and private collections and publications worldwide. Most recently he was published in the 4 volume series – “Visual Century – South African Art in Context”, 100 Years of South African Art by Wits University for the South African National Gallery, 2012

Yusef Brown

Yusef Brown

Yusef drew his way through and out of prison. Drawing black people who had made major contributions to the awakening of black people into the truth of who they are kept him positive and gave direction to his own life. He was introduced to Lynn Creighton several months after he returned to the neighborhood. She saw the power of his work and invited him to put together an exhibition. His show will be at Studio 1317 through the month of June 2014.

Reception for Artists: June 7, 2013 from 6 to 9 pm

Could anything capture the littoral beauty and creative spirit of the coastline between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara more eloquently than a guitar fashioned from driftwood and abalone shells? The “Resin-ator,” as J. Peter Boles’ fully functional six-string is called, is a centerpiece of the celebration at Studio 1317 on Saturday, April 27, marking the close of his exhibition there.

Other unique items by the Ventura artist featured at “Lyrics, in Wood, Shell and Resin” include vessels crafted from the same driftwood and shimmering rose-colored fragments, bound by a colorful resin-like material whose recipe the artist keeps a secret.

The show will accompanied by live music from Boles himself, a singer-songwriter whom the LA Times described as “a small guy with a big set of lungs, who has that classic folk voice with a rich range that fills the room and obliterates the idle chit-chat.”

Join us at Studio 1317 in Ventura, 3pm to 6pm

LYRICS IN WOOD, SHELL, AND RESIN

Do not miss the exhibition of Thelma Smith’s quilts at Studio 1317 in Ventura. Thelma Smith empathically reveals the pathos of homeless life in our country in elegant, texturally rich tapestries as quilts.

In Studio 1317, these master works are hung as a forest in which the viewer is surrounded by humanity dealing with a very difficult life situation.

The intensity of Thelma Smith’s effort to reveal the truth of this national tragedy is seen on the reverse sides of the quilts where the multitude of quilting stitches create a ghost image of the front side. The beauty of the quilts calls attention to the basic human beauty of these citizens trapped in dismal lives.

Mounted for exhibition during February, the quilts are held over for March. The gallery at Studio 1317 at 1317 Ventura Avenue is open from noon to five on Saturday, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday or by calling 818 554 9819 for an appointment
